Jakarta – Jangan sepelekan masalah ‘angin’ di ban kendaraan. Sebab, menurut penelitian terbaru, ‘kurang angin’ pada ban menyumbang potensi boros bahan bakar tiap kendaraan yang pada akhirnya menyebabkan biaya perjalanan menjadi lebih tinggi.

Penelitian yang dilakukan perusahaan spare-part Kwik Fit di Inggris mengungkapkan kalau para ada sekitar 1 miliar pounds atau sekitar Rp 14,5 triliun yang terbuang percuma karena masalah ban kurang angin di negeri Ratu Elizabeth tersebut.

Sebab, karena ban kendaraan kurang angin, konsumsi bahan bakar pun dikatakan Kwik Fit akan meningkat yang pada akhirnya akan menyebabkan si pemilik kendaraan membeli bensin yang lebih banyak dari yang semestinya.

Survei yang dilakukan di Inggris itu menunjukkan kalau lebih dari 2/3 (69 persen) mobil di Inggris berjalan dengan ban yang setidaknya 3 psi bawah rekomendasi produsen.

Selain itu, kebiasaan 9,7 juta pengendara Inggris yang mematikan AC ketika berkendara dalam cuaca hangat juga menyumbang pemborosan bahan bakar. Karena, ‘niat baik’ untuk menghemat bahan bakar dengan mematikan AC diklaim malah akan menambah konsumsi bahan bakar kendaraan.

Alasannya, ketika AC dimatikan dan jendela dibuka, maka hambatan angin yang diciptakan oleh jendela yang terbuka secara signifikan dapat mempengaruhi aerodinamika mobil dan karena itu akan meningkatkan konsumsi bahan bakar.

“Daripada panik membeli bahan bakar berlebih, pengendara dapat mempertimbangkan mencari cara untuk meningkatkan efisiensi bahan bakar mereka,” kata direktur komunikasi Kwik Fit, Roger Griggs seperti dilansir detikOto.

“Tapi ada beberapa langkah pengendara dapat dilakukan untuk membuat bahan bakar yang mereka miliki jadi lebih irit seperti memeriksa tekanan ban,” tambahnya.

Jakarta – Setiap hari orang tentu akan mengalami pertambahan usia yang membuat raut wajahnya bertambah tua. Namun beberapa kebiasaan dapat membuat wajah seseorang jauh lebih tua dari usia sebenarnya. Apa saja?

Banyak orang yang mencoba berbagai produk anti penuaan agar selalu tampak muda. Namun tidak banyak yang menyadari bahwa kebiasaan gaya hidup dapat mempercepat proses penuaan.

Berikut beberapa kebiasaan buruk yang dapat membuat Anda lebih cepat tua, seperti dilansir onlymyhealth, Jumat (30/3/2012):

1. Membiarkan stres
Untuk menjadi muda, Anda perlu merasa muda. Tapi penghalang terbesar untuk pikiran awet muda adalah stres. Stres dapat menyebabkan penurunan kognitif yang serius. Sangat penting untuk mencoba mengatasi stres melalui teknik relaksasi seperti meditasi, yoga dan olahraga secara teratur.

2. Tak tidur nyenyak
Tak hanya mengistirahatkan otot, saat tidur tubuh mengalami perbaikan dan detoksifikasi (mengeluarkan racun). Tidur juga memberi kesempatan bagi sistem kekebalan tubuh untuk memproduksi hormon-hormon imunitas (kekebalan tubuh). Oleh karena itulah, orang yang kurang tidur bisa tampak lebih cepat tua.

3. Merokok
Semua orang tahu bahwa merokok berbahaya bagi kesehatan dan dapat menyebabkan penyakit mengancam nyawa yang melibatkan jantung dan paru-paru. Tak hanya itu, merokok juga melepaskan enzim tertentu yang tidak menguntungkan dalam tubuh, yang pada gilirannya mengurangi elastisitas kulit dan menimbulkan keriput.

4. Diet ketat
Untuk mendapatkan tubuh langsing dan ramping adalah impian semua orang, terutama kaum hawa. Namun melakukan diet ketat adalah ide yang buruk. Diet ketat akan menghalangi tubuh mendapatkan nutrisi penting dan dapat menjadi ancaman kesehatan yang serius dalam jangka waktu panjang.

Selain itu, penuaan kulit akan menyesuaikan diri dengan penurunan berat badan drastis, garis-garis halus dan kerutan pun mudah datang. Meskipun, penurunan berat badan sangat penting seiring pertambahan usia, menjaga tingkat moderat berat badan sangat dianjurkan.

Selain itu, hidup berpindah-pindah dan beralih ke diet yang tidak sehat bisa menjadi beberapa kebiasaan lain yang membuat Anda lebih cepat tua. Menjalani kehidupan yang aktif, seimbang dan bahagia adalah kunci membuat tubuh awet muda.

Why Bilinguals Are Smarter

SPEAKING two languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.

This view of bilingualism is remarkably different from the understanding of bilingualism through much of the 20th century. Researchers, educators and policy makers long considered a second language to be an interference, cognitively speaking, that hindered a child’s academic and intellectual development.

They were not wrong about the interference: there is ample evidence that in a bilingual’s brain both language systems are active even when he is using only one language, thus creating situations in which one system obstructs the other. But this interference, researchers are finding out, isn’t so much a handicap as a blessing in disguise. It forces the brain to resolve internal conflict, giving the mind a workout that strengthens its cognitive muscles.

Bilinguals, for instance, seem to be more adept than monolinguals at solving certain kinds of mental puzzles. In a 2004 study by the psychologists Ellen Bialystok and Michelle Martin-Rhee, bilingual and monolingual preschoolers were asked to sort blue circles and red squares presented on a computer screen into two digital bins — one marked with a blue square and the other marked with a red circle.

In the first task, the children had to sort the shapes by color, placing blue circles in the bin marked with the blue square and red squares in the bin marked with the red circle. Both groups did this with comparable ease. Next, the children were asked to sort by shape, which was more challenging because it required placing the images in a bin marked with a conflicting color. The bilinguals were quicker at performing this task.

The collective evidence from a number of such studies suggests that the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function — a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems and performing various other mentally demanding tasks. These processes include ignoring distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another and holding information in mind — like remembering a sequence of directions while driving.

Why does the tussle between two simultaneously active language systems improve these aspects of cognition? Until recently, researchers thought the bilingual advantage stemmed primarily from an ability for inhibition that was honed by the exercise of suppressing one language system: this suppression, it was thought, would help train the bilingual mind to ignore distractions in other contexts. But that explanation increasingly appears to be inadequate, since studies have shown that bilinguals perform better than monolinguals even at tasks that do not require inhibition, like threading a line through an ascending series of numbers scattered randomly on a page.

The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be more basic: a heightened ability to monitor the environment. “Bilinguals have to switch languages quite often — you may talk to your father in one language and to your mother in another language,” says Albert Costa, a researcher at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Spain. “It requires keeping track of changes around you in the same way that we monitor our surroundings when driving.” In a study comparing German-Italian bilinguals with Italian monolinguals on monitoring tasks, Mr. Costa and his colleagues found that the bilingual subjects not only performed better, but they also did so with less activity in parts of the brain involved in monitoring, indicating that they were more efficient at it.

The bilingual experience appears to influence the brain from infancy to old age (and there is reason to believe that it may also apply to those who learn a second language later in life).

In a 2009 study led by Agnes Kovacs of the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy, 7-month-old babies exposed to two languages from birth were compared with peers raised with one language. In an initial set of trials, the infants were presented with an audio cue and then shown a puppet on one side of a screen. Both infant groups learned to look at that side of the screen in anticipation of the puppet. But in a later set of trials, when the puppet began appearing on the opposite side of the screen, the babies exposed to a bilingual environment quickly learned to switch their anticipatory gaze in the new direction while the other babies did not.

Bilingualism’s effects also extend into the twilight years. In a recent study of 44 elderly Spanish-English bilinguals, scientists led by the neuropsychologist Tamar Gollan of the University of California, San Diego, found that individuals with a higher degree of bilingualism — measured through a comparative evaluation of proficiency in each language — were more resistant than others to the onset of dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: the higher the degree of bilingualism, the later the age of onset.

Nobody ever doubted the power of language. But who would have imagined that the words we hear and the sentences we speak might be leaving such a deep imprint?

Baldness Protein Found in Study That May Lead to Treatments

Male-pattern baldness may be caused by a protein in the scalp, according to research that raises the possibility drugs being tested by Merck & Co. (MRK) and Actelion Ltd. (ATLN) for other uses might prevent hair loss.

Bald spots had an excessive amount of a protein called prostaglandin D2 or PGD2, according to a study in Science Translational Medicine. Merck’s experimental treatment for facial flushing and Actelion’s allergy compound, both in late- stage studies, block the protein.

About eight out of 10 white men experience some balding before the age of 70, according to the researchers. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)’s Rogaine and Merck’s Propecia slow the loss, and some users see minor hair growth. Men may be able to regrow all their hair if the inhibiting protein is removed, said George Cotsarelis, chairman of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

“We really do think if you remove the inhibition, you get longer hair,” Cotsarelis, a study author, said in a telephone interview. “We don’t know” if the follicles will return to their former lengths, he said.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and other medical groups.
Bald Parts

The researchers looked at all the genes in the scalp samples from five men, comparing the bald parts to the haired parts. They found higher expressions of the gene that produces PGD2 in the bald samples, compared to the spots with hair. With that as a guide, they found in samples of 17 men with hair loss that PGD2 was three times higher in the bald spots than where hair was growing. The scientists then used mice to show that excessive PGD2 decreased follicles.

Previous work has shown that the stem cells that create hair are still intact in bald men, Cotsarelis said. The follicles are also there, though they look smaller and produce thinner, shorter hair. Over time, the hair is so short it no longer passes the surface of the skin.

“This makes me wonder if this is the pathway,” said Paradi Mirmirani, a dermatologist at Kaiser Permanente in Vallejo, California. She wasn’t involved in the study. “In terms of therapeutics, it really opens the door to have someone come in and target these in a very narrow way.”
Final Studies

Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, is testing laropiprant as a flushing inhibitor to be administered with niacin. Allschwil, Switzerland-based Actelion’s setipiprant is being studied as a treatment for allergic inflammation of nasal pathways. Both therapies are in the final phase of testing generally needed for regulatory approval.

Merck isn’t studying the anti-flushing drug in hair loss, said Ian McConnell, a Merck spokesman, in a telephone interview. “We haven’t seen any signals” in patient trials that the therapy might reduce baldness, he said.

Actelion isn’t testing setipiprant as a baldness treatment, said Roland Haefeli, a company spokesman.

The role prostaglandins might play in hair growth was hinted at by Allergan Inc. (AGN)’s Latisse, which is an artificial version of prostaglandin F2-alpha, said Mirmirani. Latisse was originally developed for glaucoma, and doctors discovered it made eyelashes grow.

“They could pick out who was on it from the waiting room because of the super-long eyelashes,” Mirmirani said in a telephone interview.

Racun Tomcat Lebih Ganas daripada Kobra

INILAH.COM, Jakarta – Serangga tomcat memang sedang hangat diperbincangkan. Bukan lantaran datang tiba-tiba dan menyerang sebuah pemukinan elit di Surabaya, serangga ini diklaim bisa mengeluarkan racun berbahaya.

Tomcat termasuk golongan kumbang. Meski ia tidak menggigit atau menyengat, hewan satu ini perlu diwaspadai. Kumbang tersebut dapat mengeluarkan toksin atau racun bila bersentuhan dengan kulit manusia secara langsung.

Racun yang terkandung dalam serangga ini dikenali sebagai ‘aederin’: (C24 H43 O9 N) dinamakan dalam tahun 1953. Cairan ini disinyalir 12 kali lebih mematikan dari bisa ular kobra.

Namun racun itu bisa mencemar secara tidak langsung bila manusia bersentuhan dengan baju, atau benda lain yang terkena. Racun yang dikeluarkan bisa menyebabkan iritasi. Gejala baru muncul dalam waktu 12-36 jam. Dan iritasi dapat berlangsung dari dua sampai tiga pekan.

Itu sebabnya, jika sudah terkena dermatitis otomatis seperti seprei dan uba rampe-nya, handuk maupun alat-alat yang disinyalir terkena racun tomcat harus dibersihkan.

Bersentuhan dengan kumbang ini saat merayap atau tidur, menghancurkannya pada badan atau mengosok dengan jari yang kotor akan menyebabkan konjunktivitis dan penyakit kulit yang dikenal dengan herpes, dermatitis linearis, dan aederus dermatitis.

Pencegahan dan Pengobatan

Tomcat sangat senang bila berada di tempat yang terang penuh cahaya, sehingga sebaiknya hindari berada terlalu dekat dengan cahaya lampu atau minimalkan penggunaan cahaya dekat pintu dan jendela.

Gunakan jaring nyamuk atau semprot aerosol atau pestisida organik dari campuran laos, daun mimba, dan sereh untuk mematikan kumbang yang masuk.

Bila ada kumbang kanai yang hinggap di kulit, jangan mematikannya di tubuh, namun tiup hingga pergi.

Jika kulit mengalami kontak dengan serangga ini, timbul sensasi terbakar yang kemudian menjadi kemerahan disertai munculnya nanah di bagian tengah dalam beberapa hari.

Segera cuci bagian yang terkena dengan air dan sabun. Jika terjadi reaksi kulit, cuci dengan antiseptik ringan pemanganate kalium dilusian (Kmn04) seperti hydrocortisone 1% dan krim steroid lemah misalnya betametasone dan antibiotik neomycin sulfat 5%.

Jangan menggaruk luka, karena racunnya bahkan dapat berpindah ke bagian lain kulit lewat cairan di luka. Namun, bila luka terjadi pada area mata dan selaput lendir, sebaiknya segera ke dokter.

Dengan pengobatan, umumnya luka akan membaik dalam 10 hari hingga tiga minggu tanpa menimbulkan bekas. Namun, luka dapat membekas jika melibatkan dermis.

Dokter juga menyarankan untuk menghindari sinar matahari agar tak terjadi inflamasi luka yang menyebabkan bekas kehitaman.
Poisonous insects Tomcat Surabaya Still Worrying

SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com – Residents in several locations in the west of Surabaya last few days worrying about the attack tomcat, insects that emit poisonous liquid.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Serangga tomcat belakangan menghebohkan masyarakat karena menyerang warga Surabaya. Korban serangan tomcat mengalami dermatitis, kulitnya seperti melepuh, mengeluarkan cairan, dan merasa gatal.

Di balik persoalan mencegah serangan, mengobati luka yang ditimbulkan, maupun apa penyebab munculnya serangga ini, ada hal lain yang cukup menarik, yakni soal nama. Mengapa diberi nama tomcat?

Guru Besar Ilmu Serangga dari Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Aunu Rauf, mengungkapkan bahwa serangga tomcat adalah serangga yang tak asing bagi masyarakat Indonesia.

Di beberapa wilayah Indonesia, serangga tomcat sering kali disebut semut kanai atau semut kayap. Menurut Aunu, kumbang ini sejatinya merupakan spesies kumbang Paederus fuscipes.

“Masyarakat menyebutnya tomcat, mungkin karena bentuknya sepintas seperti pesawat tempur Tomcat F-14,” ungkap Aunu lewat e-mail kepada Kompas.com, Selasa (20/3/2012).

Nama tomcat sendiri sebenarnya di luar negeri merupakan merek produk pengontrol populasi hewan pengerat dan produk lem semut. Tomcat juga merupakan produk pestisida.

Kumbang tomcat dalam bahasa Inggris juga sering disebut rove beetle. Jenis kumbang ini mencakup famili Staphylinidae, terdiri dari ribuan genus dan kurang lebih 46.000 spesies.

Spesies Paederus fiscipes adalah salah satu jenis kumbang yang masuk dalam genus Paederus. Totalnya, ada sekitar 12 spesies yang masuk genus tersebut.

Ciri-ciri serangga ini adalah memiliki kepala warna hitam, dada dan perut berwarna oranye, dan sayap kebiruan. Warna mencolok berfungsi sebagai peringatan bagi predatornya, bahwa serangga ini punya racun. Ukurannya sekitar 7-10 mm.

Tomcat biasa hidup di persawahan. Pada siang hari, serangga ini biasa terbang di tanaman padi untuk mencari mangsa berupa wereng dan hama padi lainnya.

“Jadi, sebetulnya kumbang tomcat ini atau Paederus fuscipes adalah serangga yang bermanfaat bagi petani karena membantu mengendalikan hama-hama padi,” jelas Aunu.

Pada malam hari, serangga ini cenderung tertarik pada cahaya lampu. Hal inilah yang menurut Aunu memicu masuknya tomcat ke rumah atau apartemen warga di Surabaya.

Adapun dermatitis yang dialami warga diakibatkan oleh racun paederin yang diproduksi serangga dengan bantuan bakteri. Racun akan keluar saat serangga dalam bahaya atau dipencet.

Terkait dengan pencegahan serangan-serangga ini, Aunu mengimbau masyarakat untuk menutup jendela atau pintu rapat saat malam sebelum menyalakan lampu. Ventilasi jendela bisa ditutup dengan kain kasa untuk memperkecil kemungkinan tomcat masuk.

Warga juga diimbau tidak memencet jika serangga hinggap di bagian tubuh, cukup menghalau dengan kertas atau tiupan. Bila sampai terkena racun, maka langkah pertama adalah membasuh kulit dengan sabun beberapa kali.

JAKARTA. Penjualan emas batangan Logam mulia di PT Antam UBPP Logam Mulia turun signifikan pada Februari lalu. Vice President PT Antam UBPP Logam Mulia, Herman menyebut, penjualan emas batangan sepanjang Februari lalu hanya sebesar 368,9 kilogram (kg).

“Jumlah tersebut turun 46% dibandingkan penjualan Januari yang mencapai 687 kg,” ujarnya, Rabu (14/3). Jika ditotal, penjualan emas batangan pada tahun ini sampai akhir Februari baru sekitar 969kg.

Herman menuturkan, penjualan di Logam Mulia memang mulai berkurang menjelang diresmikannya kebijakan Bank Indonesia (BI) mengenai aturan gadai emas.

Sebagai catatan, BI telah meresmikan dan mengeluarkan surat edaran tentang gadai emas pada 29 Februari lalu. Salah satu isinya mengatur jumlah pembiayaan gadai emas di perbankan syariah dan tujuan gadai emas.

Peraturan tersebut membuat kesempatan nasabah memiliki emas dan bergadai mulai berkurang. Sebelumnya, nasabah yang punya uang sedikit bisa punya emas, karena bank membiayai untuk pembelian emas. “Kebijakan sekarang ini mengharuskan nasabah punya emas dulu, baru bisa gadai,” ujar Herman.

Meski begitu, dia mengklaim, penjualan emas batangan di Februari meningkat cukup signifikan jika dibandingkan penjualan Februari tahun lalu.

Herman mengakui, saat ini masyarakat sudah teredukasi mengenai berinvestasi dalam bentuk emas. Dari awal tahun lalu pun harga emas sudah meningkat signifikan. “Pada awal tahun lalu, harga bersih (nett price) emas Rp 495 ribu, sekarang ini sudah mencapai Rp 518 ribu,” imbuhnya.

Risks: More Red Meat, More Mortality

Eating red meat is associated with a sharply increased risk of death from cancer and heart disease, according to a new study, and the more of it you eat, the greater the risk.

The analysis, published online Monday in Archives of Internal Medicine, used data from two studies that involved 121,342 men and women who filled out questionnaires about health and diet from 1980 through 2006. There were 23,926 deaths in the group, including 5,910 from cardiovascular disease and 9,464 from cancer.

People who ate more red meat were less physically active and more likely to smoke and had a higher body mass index, researchers found. Still, after controlling for those and other variables, they found that each daily increase of three ounces of red meat was associated with a 12 percent greater risk of dying over all, including a 16 percent greater risk of cardiovascular death and a 10 percent greater risk of cancer death.

The increased risks linked to processed meat, like bacon, were even greater: 20 percent over all, 21 percent for cardiovascular disease and 16 percent for cancer.

If people in the study had eaten half as much meat, the researchers estimated, deaths in the group would have declined 9.3 percent in men and 7.6 percent in women.

Previous studies have linked red meat consumption and mortality, but the new results suggest a surprisingly strong link.

“When you have these numbers in front of you, it’s pretty staggering,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of medicine at Harvard.

Data terbaru soal jumlah tenaga kerja asing menunjukan, ekspatriat yang bekerja di Indonesia umumnya sebagai kalangan profesional. Namun selain itu banyak juga yang menduduki posisi strategis sebagai direksi perusahaan.

Kementerian tenaga kerja dan transmigrasi (Kemenakertrans) mencatat selama 1 Januari sampai 30 Desember 2011 terdapat 77.300 orang tenaga kerja asing yang ada di Indonesia.

Sebagian besar tenaga kerja asing itu merupakan profesional sebanyak 34.763 orang, advisor/konsultan 12.761 orang, manajer 12.505 orang, Direksi 6.511 orang, teknisi 5.276 orang. Sedangkan sisanya terdiri, supervisor 4.746 orang dan komisaris 738 orang.

Sebagai pembanding, data tahun 2009 menunjukan terjadi kenaikan beberapa pos jabatan orang asing yang di Indonesia. Dua tahun lalu tenaga profesional asing hanya 21.251 orang, teknisi 17.294 orang, manajer 9.234 orang dan pemilik perusahaan 4.639 orang.

Sekjen Kemnakertrans Muchtar Luthfie mengatakan dalam rangka pengendalian jumlah tenaga kerja asing setidaknya pemerintah mempertimbangkan beberapa aspek, antara lain soal asas manfaat. Yakni, apakah penggunaan tenaga kerja asing mendorong pembukaan lapangan kerja yang luas terutama bagi pekerja lokal.

Selain itu, aspek legalitas dan kebutuhan juga menjadi pertimbangan utama bagi keberadaan pekerja dari luar negeri. Pertimbangan lain menyangkut pengembangan SDM, dalam arti apakah masuknya tenaga kerja asing itu akan memberikan kemajuan bagi pengembangan kualitas SDM lokal. Misalnya, menyangkut alih-keterampilan dan alih-teknologi.
